  2. The Department started with the “university in October 1960 as a department in the Faculty of Science and housed at Carver Building.

  2. Application of theory and methods of mathematics to real life and physical problems and engage in cutting edge research that make us there in the frontier of research in mathematical sciences.

  2. The Department believes and stands for excellence in teaching and research.
  3. The department’s Strength: we have one of the best intellectual resources in mathematics in the world noting we have six world reknowned professors of mathematics. Department of Mathematics, University of Nigeria is visible on the pages and websites of reputable international academic journals and publications. We have some eight or more of our staff studing for various higher degrees abroad.
  4. Our weakness is financial resources and funding.
  5. We have some good opportunities in the many sectors of the economy.
  6. Our threat is in the area of facilities that matches new technologies, in established patterns and relationships that are supported by the University authorities that are no longer being honored. Other threats include lack of cooperation in researches by individuals.

Some generic strategic issues peculiar to our Department is lack of research grants for researches and lack of support for attendance at conferences both national and international which other universities in Nigeria are making available to their staff. Issues of motivation is a generic strategic issue.

  9. our department’s core competencies include breakthroughs in application of mathematical methods in the solution of problems in engineering, medicine, and finance.
  10. Some strategic goals will include

(i) Involving the Industry in researches in mathematics.

(ii) Securing adequate funding for Departmental researches that relates to medicine, engineering, finances etc.

(III) Sponsoring mathematics researchers to national and international conferences and staff exchange programmes.

(IV) Organizing conferences of international standard where the potentials are made open and realizable thus attracting other sectors interests in funding researches in mathematics.

(V) Engaging in interdisciplinary researches.
